Imaging of Traumatic Brain Injury Patients: Whole-Body Simultaneous PET and MRI
Researchers have a new weapon in their arsenal to diagnose and treat traumatic brain injury (TBI). The National Institutes of Health Clinical Center began imaging patients last week on a first-of-its-kind, whole-body simultaneous positron emission topography (PET) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) device. The Biograph mMR offers a more complete picture of abnormal metabolic activity in a shorter time frame than separate MRI and PET scans, two tests many patients undergo.
“This scanner combines the two most powerful imaging tools,” said David Bluemke, M.D., Ph.D., director of NIH Clinical Center Radiology and Imaging Sciences. “The MRI points us to abnormalities in the body, and the PET tells us the metabolic activity of that abnormality, be it a damaged part of the brain or a tumor. This will be a major change for many patients.”
The new device makes patient care swifter and safer. The faster turnaround time and more comprehensive results will help diagnose patients at an earlier stage of disease, leading to better outcomes, Bluemke said. Additionally, traditional PET scanners combine computed tomography imaging, which uses radiation, while the MRI and PET technology of the new Biograph mMR does not. The risk of exposure to low doses of medical radiation from diagnostic medical-imaging tests is not known, but very high radiation doses have the potential to cause cancer.
We are optimistic that this new technology will become readily available for TBI victims. PritzkerOlsen law firm has won millions for TBI victims, including a recent settlement for $2,750,000. Contact our attorneys for a free consultation.
Minneapolis House Explosion Puts Two in Hospital
A gas explosion has resulted in a house fire and two hospitalizations in Minneapolis, MN. On Saturday, July 31, a home on the 4300 block of Morgan Avenue in North Minneapolis exploded while the homeowner and her daughter were inside. Both are in critical condition at Hennepin County Medical Center, being treated for severe burns.
“Gas explosions are tragic accidents,” said personal injuryattorney Fred Pritzker. “Our experience is that they are almost always preventable.”
Neighbors told news sources that the homeowner and her daughter climbed out of a window that had blown out in order to escape the fire. The cause of the explosion remains undetermined but authorities are continuing to investigate. The woman had only moved into the neighborhood 5 months prior to the incident and may have had a new gas stove that could have been improperly installed, according to news reports. The Minneapolis Fire Department has not confirmed that information.
Gas lines in the rest of the neighborhood were inspected following the explosion, and everything was found to be in working order.

Rollover Accident Information From MN Rollover Accident Attorney
According to a 2011 report from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA):
“Rollover crashes still comprise a disproportionately large number of highway fatalities. Although they account for only three percent of vehicles in crashes, they lead to approximately one-third of all occupant deaths. Some vehicle safety features recently introduced in the motor vehicle fleet may be contributing to a reduction in rollover crashes and the harm they cause. These features include rollover sensors to trigger inflatable SCABs (aka rollover protection) to mitigate occupant injury, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) to reduce loss of yaw control, and Roll Stability Control (RSC) to minimize the number of rollover crashes that occur. These safety features are typically installed in Light Trucks and Vans (LTVs).”
The accident injury lawyers at Pritzker Olsen have recovered millions of dollars for victims injured in van rollover accidents and SUV rollover accidents. People injured in a rollover accident may be able to file a lawsuit if it is found that another driver is at fault, or they may be able to file a lawsuit against a manufacturer if it is found that a vehicle defect contributed to the accident. An injured person may receive damages (money) for:
- Medical bills
- Wage loss
- Loss of future earning capacity
- Pain and suffering

Bus Accident Lawsuit Settled in Minnesota
The bus accident attorneys at Pritzker Olsen are representing several families of high school students involved in a motor coach accident, and recently settled one of the clients’ cases for an undisclosed amount.
In spring 2008, a group of 43 high school students was returning from a band trip in Chicago back to their home in Minnesota. The bus crashed on Interstate 94 just south of Albertville, Minnesota after the bus driver fell asleep around 6 a.m. One student died and several others were seriously injured.
“Unfortunately, driver fatigue can be a common issue in bus accident cases like this,” said attorney Elliot Olsen, who is representing victims and their families. “Drivers can also become distracted by things like texting, multitasking, or they may become distracted by passengers on the bus.”
Bus Accident Lawsuit: Why you need an experienced attorney
“An experienced bus accident attorney will know exactly what needs to be done to gather as much evidence as possible,” Olsen said. One of the first steps is to locate the bus’s electronic control module, or “black box.” This provides valuable information about how the accident may have occurred. Another key piece is the driver’s log book, which can indicate whether the driver was fatigued and may have been breaking the hours of service rules, which dictate how long a driver can safely operate the vehicle.
