Hit-and-Run Victim Suffers Brain Injuries
A hearing-impaired woman who was walking to the grocery store in Apple Valley to buy some cat food on Friday night is being treated for traumatic brain injuries and broken bones after she was struck by a hit-and-run driver as she crossed Cedar Avenue in the crosswalk at the intersection with 153rd Street.
Police and family members of Joan LeVasseur, 25, of Apple Valley, are asking the public to help identify the driver. Apple Valley Police Sgt. Joe Shaw told the Star Tribune that several witnesses saw the accident shortly after 9 p.m. Friday, but no one got a license plate or a solid description of the vehicle.
Shaw said it’s possible the hit-and-run vehicle was tan in color. It could be a van, SUV or large sedan, probably with front-end damage. Tips are being taken by Apple Valley Police at 952-953-2700.
Family members said Joan LeVasseur’s deafness didn’t impede her from frequent long walks. They said the collision left her with traumatic brain injuries, a fractured pelvis and other injuries that doctors are working on at Hennepin County Medical Center. On Saturday night, she was in critical condition.
The injured woman’s mother, Patty Boever, told the Star Tribune: “We work hard all our lives to keep our children safe and someone just does this and drives away? It’s insane. Don’t people have a heart.”
